CDC Needle Fly

Fly tying classes are part of the inclusive packages we offer at Skålestrømmen. You can learn to make these all these flies yourself. Tying materials and tools will be supplied if cannot bring your own.

The fly shown below works very well in Skålestrømmen (and around the world). There are of course many other, mostly more complicated types of flies that also work, but we like it simple and efficient.

However, do not worry. A selection of flies is included in the  fly fishing packages we offer. You can also buy flies and materials in our flyshop.

Deer Hair Caddis

The Deer Hair Caddis is supposedly imitating an adult caddis fly, but don’́t be surprised when it takes fish in a different hatch. You can fish this fly dead drift or stripped & twitched. When tied correctly, it is a very sturdy bug.
This pattern was a little difficult for me when I started tying my own flies, but I cracked the code with this fly after I had seen Hans Weilenmann clipping the deer hair prior to tying it onto the hook.

ANATOMY & MATERIALS

Hook: Standard dry fly hook size 10 to 18

Thread: Dyneema 55

Body: Fly-Rite dubbing caddis green or brown works very well, but you can also use seals fur or hare dubbing.

Wing: Deer Hair

Per from Sweden and Neil from London

Fly Angler Neil fishing under the Rainbow - Fly fishing for trout and Arctic char at Skålestrømmen, Norway

Last week Per from Sweden and Neil from London came to fish Skålestrømmen. They had picked a very good week. It was sunny and warm for he most time. The hatches were OK and the fishing very good too. Despite all the warm weather, Skålestrømmen stayed cool and the fish were active and very fit. It was not easy to keep them on once hooked.

Neil was very creative and really explored each and every corner of the area. Very inspiring to watch such dedicated fisherman. He tried everything he knew and also gave new methods a try. Per was game, but had a different approach. Both caught good fish and had great time.

During the day we tied flies, discussed the previous nights fishing and planned the next adventure.

I really missed the two when they had to leave after a very busy week.
